Recently an article posted by totalfratdouchedotcom (I'm sorry I meant totalfratmove.com) started trending on facebook and twitter and it seems that it has opened up a huge can of worms. So instead of posting some long facebook status firing back, I decided to take to my blog. Now, before everyone who agrees with this guy on his opinion regarding high waisted shorts attacks me, let me be clear- you are all welcome to your have your own taste and personal style. What troubles me is the tone of the article which implies that apparently the men of the world think that we women are dressing for THEM?? And what's even worse is that there are women AGREEING. Who are you people?!?!
Now I don't like to think of myself as a "feminist" per-say but that's mainly because I just don't like to put labels on things or put myself in a box of any sort. In this case though- I'm going to have to side with the feminists.
FIRST OF ALL: From a fashion stand point high waisted shorts actually are more flattering on certain body types. I agree that they do not work for everyone, I also agree that there is a time and a place for them (and the work place isn't one of them, sorry)- but low-cut styles don't work for everyone either. For example: I am pretty thin, but the biggest area of my body is my hips- so when I wear low cut ANYTHING I look like I have a muffin top- when I actually don't. What's important is that every woman learn how to dress for her own body type. High waisted styles allow me personally to look fashionable without having to wear a mid waist mom-jean. High waisted shorts also make shorter girl's legs look longer.
SECOND OF ALL: People should feel free to dress in any way that they feel comfortable. No one is writing articles about the fact that every asshole at Arizona State is wearing the exact same jeans and flannel all winter followed by bro tanks and board shorts all summer now are they? No one ever goes up to a man at an event and says "I'm sorry your suit is not tailored properly for your body shape" (even though someone really should- guys, get it together). Some women want to hide their stomach, some just like the style- either way it's no one's business but their own.
THIRDLY: While this stupid article might be "trending"- it it not the only opinion out there. Quite a few guys I know have admitted to really liking the look.
FOURTHLY: I think this is probably the most important factor: this article was written with a tone implying that women should dress to impress men. I actually find this laughable because when I get dressed to go out I actually think more about what my other stylish WOMEN friends will like. There's really nothing better than a woman who's fashion sense you admire giving you the thumbs up on an outfit you took 30 minutes to put together. There are the occasional moments where I have gotten dressed for a man- an anniversary dinner, valentine's day with someone I cared about, the bedroom; but on an average day when I wake up and get ready the LAST thought on my mind is "I hope every random creepy dude on the street likes my outfit & ogles my ass." So get off your high horses fratty douchebags of the world and stop spreading this slut-shaming, rape-culture, psycho-babble bullshit because I'm over it.
& LASTLY: A friend pointed out that this dude claims that these shorts remind him of his grandma? I think she said it best so I will just leave you with her quote. "Who was this guys grandma??? If these shorts reminded me of grams I would be more concerned about my grandma than the shorts..."
So there's my 2 cents. Feel free to comment below.
